SABRINA’S ADVICE & PICKS
Garnet has its name either from the Middle English Term “Gernet” meaning the “Dark Red” or the Latin “granatus” meaning “the grain” which probably refer to the seeds of “Punica granatum (Pomegranate)”. Garnet has an age old relation with the fruit because of its red seeds similar shape, size and color. Six common species of garnet are recognized based on their chemical composition. They are pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular (varieties of which are hessonites or cinnamon-stone and tsavorite), uvarovite and andradite. Garnets are found in numerous locations including Kenya, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Brazil, India, Madagascar, Canada and USA. USA is considered to be the largest supplier of Garnets; the places associated with production are Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, Florida, California and Virginia. Africa comes after USA in the supply of Garnets. Notable quantities of Garnets is also said to be found in Czech Republic and Spain. Garnet should always be cleaned with dry soft cloth. It should also be protected from scratches, sharp blows, harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures.
